Britt Robertson Girlboss Interview

Britt Robertson Girlboss Interview

Author Sophia Amoruso in the Netflix series of the same title. And though the premise of the story, which is how Sophia overcame all odds and developed an entire clothing company from just selling clothes online in the early 2000s, makes it sound as though she will be portrayed in an aspirational light, in a recent interview, Britt opened up about why the opposite is true.

, you'll know that Sophia isn't always the empowered you-go-girl icon we're used to seeing in these types of narratives. But Britt recently told Bustle that she thinks Sophia's unlikability is a key part of the show.

Britt

I think that's sort of the point to the show, to be honest with you, Britt said. Because she is [unlikable], it's a part of what the story is. She can't make her way in life because nobody understands her story or gets who she is. She's not a traditional female heroine. But, you know, I think it's all fair. You can feel however you want to feel about the character.

Britt Robertson Says You Aren't Supposed To Like Sophia In 'girlboss'

That said, Sophia's IRL company, Nasty Gal, has been publicly scrutinized over the years for reasons ranging from alleged unfair treatment of pregnant women to its eventual bankruptcy.

In the interview, Britt also notes the differences between the character Sophia and the real Sophia. A lot of the character, Britt admits, is cherry-picked or inflated for the sake of a show (which is understandable). I think we used the best parts of her, the most accessible parts of the real Sophia, she said, but then beefed it up for entertainment purposes so it's a comedy.

The show's opening episodes touch on Sophia doing everything from petty theft to serious disregard toward those around her (her boyfriend or boss, for example) leading some to be surprised by how honest Britt's portrayal is. Either way, Britt's daring to play a flawed character in an honest and realistic way, and you can't fault her for that. The interview naturally focused on Robertson’s new show “Girlboss.” The actress also told a story about upsetting executive producer Charlize Theron when she tore her groin.
