Detroit real-estate developer Bedrock has announced the launch of Girl Boss Fashions, a locally owned women’s apparel boutique pop-up shop that has made the transition to full brick-and-mortar at 111 Monroe St. northeast of Campus Martius Park.
“Entrepreneurs like Girl Boss Fashions’ founder Tenisia Evans are the heart and soul of Detroit’s style and culture scene, ” says Ivy Greaner, COO of Bedrock. “Bedrock is fortunate to work alongside and support Tenisia’s entrepreneurial spirit and commitment to the city as the Girl Boss brand is not only thriving but laying the groundwork for further small business success.”

Girl Boss Fashions, which opened on July 1, has a stated mission to provide women of all sizes quality pieces that are fashion-forward, figure-flattering, and stylish. The brand caters to a wide range of ages and sells apparel for every occasion. Each piece of clothing is hand-picked by Evans with sizes ranging from XS- 4X and are available in a 2, 200-square-foot space.
“Girl Boss Fashions is committed now more than ever to empowering women, supporting our community, and rooting our brand deep into the City of Detroit, ” says Evans. “As a native Detroit entrepreneur, I am ecstatic to expand Girl Boss Fashions into a permanent brick and mortar downtown with the support of the team at Bedrock.”
Evans started Girl Boss Fashions in 2016 after struggling to find clothing that both fit her well and that she felt comfortable and confident wearing. It was initially a platform to sell her customized, inspirational bling T-shirts, and Evans quickly found success and launched an online shop and her first store in 2017 on the east side of Detroit.

Girl Boss Fashions has its original shop in Detroit on Kelly Road, and has since expanded to Lakeside Mall, Partridge Creek, and Macomb Mall. Now with these four other shops open, Evans is ready to grow the Girl Boss brand.
Girl Boss Fashions’ staple bling T-shirts sport phrases such as “The struggle is real but I make it look good” and “I’m a jewel.” Girl Boss Fashions has since expanded to include dresses, skirts, pants, jackets, sweaters, and footwear. Accessories include hats, belts, sunglasses, handbags, masks, and a wide selection of jewelry.

The location is 1700sq ft and is fit for a Girl Boss to be bossed up from head to toe, by Lady Tenisia.
The brand is known for its inspirational bling peplum style top, such as “The struggle is real, but I make it look good, ” which has been worn by Taraji P. Henson. Girl Boss Fashions prides itself on providing women with quality pieces that are unique, fashion-forward, figure-flattering and stylish.
This is their second location in a little over 90 days. What originated in 2016 as an online inspirational bling t-shirt business has now blossomed into a complete brand of stores.

Lady Tenisia says she wants women to know that “you can be beautiful in the skin you’re in, no matter what size you are.” At one point Evans was once a size 26, and she recalls a time when she would shop with other first ladies and could not fit the clothing they were fitting into so she would buy accessories and blinged-out stuff. After suffering from an autoimmune disease called Sarcoidosis and losing 96lbs in a month’s time, the Girl Boss says she was led to inspiring women who were feeling that they couldn’t fit into things.
“I wanted to have a boutique that they could come to and they could be cute and I could style them, boss them up from head to toe.”

A Detroit-based apparel boutique opened its fifth metro Detroit location in downtown Detroit on Friday, with its sights set on growing nationally.

Girl Boss Fashions started with a six-month pop-up lease at 1232 Library St. with Bedrock LLC, which grew into a permanent brick-and-mortar store a year later. Now owner Tenisia Evans is leasing 2, 200 square feet at 111 Monroe St., also from Bedrock. The pop-up was extended to 15 months and after seeing steady success, so the store transitioned to a permanent space on Monroe Street.

This is Evans' fifth permanent location of the Girl Boss line. She opened her first store, Girl Boss Beauty Bar and Boutique, in 2017 at 18927 Kelley Rd. in Detroit, which is still operating. Girl Boss Fashions also has permanent storefronts in Lakeside Mall in Sterling Heights, The Mall at Partridge Creek in Clinton Township and Macomb Mall in Roseville.

Evans struggled with weight fluctuations in the past due to autoimmune complications, and seeing the lack of stylish choices for curvier women was disheartening, Evans said, but it also inspired her to create an inclusive size range in her own store.
Along with various sizes, the boutique owner said Girl Boss Fashions can style women from all walks of life, from law offices to a night on the town.
Along with its own designs, Girl Boss Fashions carries major brands such as New York-based luxury footwear label Donald Pliner and Canadian fashion brands Frank Lyman and Tricotto.

My future envisioned for Girl Boss Fashions is to be in another space, preferably in the West Coast or Florida, she said.
During her last few years in business, Evans said she has found her key to success: My secret is simple: I pray.
Evans said she has found in her years as a business owner that good work eventually pays off, and business without passion is impossible.
