For Sophia Amoruso, Girlboss is the second company she’s founded “accidentally, ” referring first to her since-shuttered Nasty Gal fashion venture. But her current company is the first she’s founded intentionally, and that now includes a professional network for career-minded millennial women.
Amoruso officially announced the new network at her fifth Girlboss Rally, a recurring event designed to bring together ambitious women for roundtables, fireside chats, and tactical talks. “The feeling of this event is something I wanted to extend beyond two days out of the year. I’ve always wanted to do something we can give our community—and women at large—24 hours a day, 7 days a week.” And while the site has inevitably already drawn comparisons to LinkedIn, it in many ways is hoping to cultivate a very different feel and serve different goals.

You can tell by a profile built with the prompts “I’m good at, ” “I’d like to learn, ” and “I’d like to meet, ” along with space for your Myers-Briggs type and your astrological sign, that Girlboss wants to stand apart from other offerings for professional development and networking—even apart from other offerings for women, like Whitney Wolfe Herd’s Bumble Bizz or member-based coworking spaces like The Riveter or The Wing. “There’s a sense of levity, ” Amoruso shared as she talked about the launch. “This isn’t a stiff, stale professional networking environment.”
The Rise And Fall Of The “girlboss”
Girlboss’ launch comes with the backing and support of some heavy hitters like Ariana Huffington, Bozoma St. John, and Imagine it Forward’s Beth Comstock. The three, along with other successful women, will participate in weekly “digital firesides, ” fielding questions from and offering advice to members. And as for collecting connections, Girlboss wants this to be a process that happens with intention; members will be able to make one request per day, and that request will need to be clearly stated…a far cry from “I’d like to add you to my professional network.”
Girlboss promises to cultivate a new online professional presence that “aims to be a space for everyone from entrepreneurs to gig economy workers to ask questions, exchange ideas, and connect with each other.” Interested users can sign up now and craft a profile in community with other ambitious and driven women, not unlike Amoruso herself.Girlboss recently announced the launch of 'Girlboss community, ' a private networking platform where women can connect with one another, and share expertise on a variety of topics.
Sophia Amoruso, who started the women's fashion brand Nasty Gal, authored #Girlboss and noticed that while women were waiting to get their books signed, they would connect with one another and exchange business cards. In the same way that these women were able to connect face-to-face, Girlboss community will be a place for crowdsourcing work opportunities, tips on salary negotiations and more.

Some of the founding members of Girlboss community are founders, CEOs and authors of well-known brands like Bumble, Away and Glossier. Currently, there are more than 25, 000 influential women who are on the waitlist for Girlboss community, which is set to launch in 2019 as a members-only platform that's accessible for a monthly fee.
